During a recent state visit to Berlin, Greece’s recently elected head of state Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that he hopes Germany will agree to begin negotiations surrounding war reparations, the Associated Press reports.
Following a meeting with Chancellor Merkel on Thursday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of the New Democracy party told members of the press “we hope there will be a positive response.”
The conservative Prime Minister is reported to have called for an overhaul to Greek-German relations during the meeting.
In a joint press conference with the German Chancellor, Mitsotakis said Greece wished to pursue financial reforms which exceed those which the EU has previously mandated.
“We want to regain trust and credibility, and then perhaps we want to exchange views on debt,” Mitsotakis.
Despite WWII reparation agreements made in 1960 and 1990 between the two countries, large numbers of Greeks feel that the issue remains unsettled. Mitsotakis indicated that his government would continue to pursue the issue.
The Greek Prime Minister mentioned that finding a solution to this problem was “important for the closer integration of our two countries.”
Mitsotakis conservative government isn’t the only modern Greek government to raise this issue. Earlier in April, the previous government sent a formal request to Berlin to begin talks on paying reparations which Athens asserts it is owed from World War I and II.
Although Merkel didn’t address the issue during the news conference, in the past Germany has said that the issue of World War II reparations to Greece had been resolved.
The Greek government believes it has a rightful claim, at the least, to 292 billion euros for Germany’s occupation of the country during World War II, and an additional 9.2 billion euros for World War I.
