Japan Condemns the Annexation of the Golan Heights by Israel

Mr. Kiyoto Tsuji, Parliamentary Vice Minister of Japan has denounced the annexation of the Golan Heights by Israel. Speaking at an open debate at the United Nations Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, Mr. Tsuji stated very clearly that Japan does not recognize the annexation of the Golan Heights by Israel and he urged Israel to fully freeze its settlement activities which are undermining the viability of a two-state solution.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga has also recently announced there is no change Japan’s opposition to the annexation of the Golan Heights by Israel. Suga made the remark at a news conference after U.S. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation officially recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

This comes amid almost universal condemnation of the move to annex the Syrian Golan by Israel. Russia, the UK, and Germany, among many others, have condemned the move stating that the Golan Heights is territory occupied by Israel, asserting that the annexation of territory by force is prohibited under international law, including the UN Charter.

Also, the European Union slammed Trump’s proclamation, affirming that its stance has never changed and that according to international law, Israel’s sovereignty over the lands which it occupied in 1967 is not recognized.

This will undoubtedly come as a blow to Jared Kushner and Genie Energy, who are keen to exploit the natural oil wealth located in the occupied Golan Heights.
