Professor Felice Daddetto, Professor emeritus of the University of Louvain, asserts that the number of secular Muslims is declining as more are becoming radicalised.

Il Giornale explains that Professor Daddetto believes that the secular world and its values has become less attractive to contemporary Islam and that is the reason more Muslims are becoming more reactionary in their faith.

He says, “There is a bit of disaffection, but there is no mass abandonment of the faith, the phenomenon affects at most 10 to 15 percent”.

He also states that at least 80 per cent of Muslims in Europe claim to be religious with Friday prayers seeing an increase in younger Muslims participating. These younger Muslims, particularly in poorer locations, are more prone to become radicalised.

The professor, discussing integration, believes that it was failing despite governments’ attempts:

“studies say that even the third and fourth generation youngsters, the children of parents born here, they maintain a certain hesitation about their belonging”.

French sociologist Olivier Galland had previously exhorted about radicalisation and religious fervour among young Muslims.

He revealed the results of a study he conducted showed that 20 per cent of Muslim students advocate religious violence.
