Johnson & Johnson shares extended declines Monday after an explosive report published by Reuters Opens a New Window. alleged the company knew about the presence of cancer-causing asbestos in its ubiquitous and iconic baby powder.
The report, which alleged that J&J didn’t tell the Food and Drug Administration about at least three tests by three different labs from 1972 to 1975 that found asbestos in its talcum powder, in one case at levels reported as “rather high,” according to internal documents from the company.
In response, J&J lambasted the Reuters article as “one-sided, false and inflammatory” in a statement published on its website.
“Simply put, the Reuters story is an absurd conspiracy theory, in that it apparently has spanned over 40 years, orchestrated among generations of global regulators, the world’s foremost scientists and universities, leading independent labs, and J&J employees themselves,” the company said in a statement. It said that J&J’s baby power is “safe and asbestos free”, citing the studies of “more than 100,000 men and women”, which they said shows talc does not cause “cancer or asebstos-related disease.”
According to Reuters, which said it examined company memos, internal reports and other confidential documents from lawyers for some of the 11,700 plaintiffs claiming the baby powder caused their cancer, from at least 1971 to the early 2000s, the company’s “raw talc and finished powders sometimes tested positive for small amounts of asbestos.”
The earliest mention of tained J&J talc, according to Reuters, occurred in 1957 and 1958 reports by a consulting lab. That continued from various times into the early 2000s, with outside reports yielding similar results. Despite that, in 1976, J&J officials assured FDA regulators that no asbestos was detectable “in any sample” as the agency was weighing limits of asbestos in talc products.
You wanna know how this should be treated? Hmm?????????? Here’s how, EUTIMES to the rescue again, the idea that never crossed your mind: Johnson & Johnson should be banned in whole in all countries of the world along with all their subsidiaries. It is unacceptable to knowingly and purposefully cause cancer to people, especially to newborns! Why not ban them? What the hell is that supposed to mean? It sounds like they had an employee who just dumped some asbestos there into the formula from time to time on his own just for fun or stuff and “they knew” but didn’t do anything about it.

It was THEY who put it there into the formula into the first place and most likely they slid it in secretly without employees knowing out of fear of being exposed. You claim of them putting it in there…actually sliding it in secretly is at best ignorant, but more idiotic. Asbestos and talc are minerals. Asbestos is sometimes found in veins throughout the talc. So talc can be contaminated by asbestos. Now if you were to state they ignored this contamination, that is one thing. But save your self the embarrassment of claiming they knowingly put it in there.
Also, the amount of contamination was probably negligible. With all your exclamation points!!!! you might think it was pure asbestos being put on babies.
Products made today can contain asbestos, as long as it is less than 1%. It is all around you and you breathe in its dust everyday. Brakes contain it, better roll up your windows and put on a respirator. Roofing and insulation can contain it, as can even potting soil. I am talking CURRENT products that are still being manufactured today.
Much like the lead issue, asbestos is WAY overblown. While I would never state that either are safe, being exposed to minute amounts over your life is harmless. The issue comes (with asbestos) repeated exposure to massive amounts of it. Think mining the product. Same with lead. The over reaction to it is silly. Doesn’t mean I think a child should eat lead paint chips, but I also think the lea control efforts (here in THE strictest lead State in USA) are ridiculous.
