The man, who rammed into people waiting at a bus stop with his car on Thursday, is a Bosnian national, local media say.
On Thursday afternoon the 32-year-old man drove his car into the pedestrians in the German city of Recklinghausen, near Dortmund.
He killed an 88-year-old and injured seven others with his car. Two victims are considered severely injured, five as slightly injured. Six injured people are aged between 17 and 67.
The man had long black hair tied into a plait (braid). He also suffered serious injuries and was brought to hospital.
The driver reportedly swerved out of his lane, crossing onto the wrong side of the street before plowing into the crowded bus stop.
The cause of the accident, is not yet known, but police assumed on Thursday the man wanted to commit suicide.
“Our thoughts are with the relatives of the deceased accident victim. We have all our compassion for you. Of course, I hope the other injured people will recover quickly,” Mayor Christoph Tesche reacted.
