A large increase in the numbers of incoming migrants has been observed during 2018, Greek news outlet Protothema reports.

Statistics of the Hellenic Police of Thessaloniki say that in August 1,138 migrants and refugees were identified while 1,157 were found in Evros during the same month.

The number of migrants in Thessaloniki reached the same level from last April, when the biggest migratory wave of the past years had been recorded at the Greek-Turkish land borders.

According to Protothema, the cost of illegals crossing the border is 2000 euros per migrant, as human traffickers have managed to find ways to penetrate police blockades.

The number of incoming migrants doubled in August compared to the same month last year. Particularly, in Evros, 1,157 immigrants were found and 28 traffickers were arrested this year. Last year, in the same area, 674 immigrants and refugees were identified, with 34 traffickers being arrested.

In Thessaloniki the numbers are similar, with 1,188 migrants having been identified and 18 traffickers arrested in August 2018. During the same month last year, 823 immigrants were found and 12 traffickers were arrested.

As well, the Greek minister of immigration, Mr. Vitsas, recently stated at the Hellenic parliament that the number of new incoming migrants had been increased by 33 per cent during the first three months of 2018 compared to last year.

Considering that the migrant flows always increase during the summer months, when weather conditions are good, it is expected that the percentage of incoming migrants will increase even more.

Large groups of Greek citizens in Thessaloniki organised a symbolic protest against the government’s migration policy.
