Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned against a potential attack on North Korea by the United States, describing it as “catastrophic.” Putin warned President Donald Trump that locating all necessary targets for a pre-emptive strike would be challenging. Amid escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, Putin urged both Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to “calm down” and advocated for a resolution to the crisis through dialogue and diplomacy.

Speaking at his annual end-of-year news conference, Putin attributed the current crisis to American policy, particularly actions following a 2005 deal aimed at denuclearizing the Kim regime. The deal, brokered by the United States, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea, set in motion the process of denuclearization. However, according to Putin, the US froze North Korean accounts and imposed additional demands, leading to North Korea’s withdrawal from the agreement.

Putin questioned the motives behind the US actions, asking, “Why did the United States do this? Was it not enough?” He accused the US of provoking North Korea to abandon the deal, contributing to the heightened tensions and the current state of crisis on the Korean Peninsula.

Expressing hope for a resolution through “common sense,” Putin’s remarks underscore the delicate diplomatic dance needed to defuse the nuclear standoff between the US and North Korea. The Russian president’s commentary adds another layer to the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region, emphasizing the need for diplomacy over military escalation. As the international community closely monitors developments, the path to a peaceful resolution remains uncertain, with leaders like Putin calling for restraint and dialogue in the face of potential catastrophe.
