Amid the bustling atmosphere of the Rempart Saint-Etienne area, an unnamed woman found herself at the center of a harrowing incident during lunchtime on Tuesday. The assailant, reportedly of Algerian origin, targeted the officer with a brazen attempt to seize her gun. When his initial effort failed, he resorted to violence, brandishing a knife and ruthlessly stabbing the woman in the throat.
The gravity of the situation unfolded as the victim was left in a serious condition, prompting authorities to enforce a lockdown around the besieged police station. Media outlets in France have reported the arrest of a 31-year-old man, who allegedly gained access to the station under the guise of filing a complaint. The motive behind this alarming attack remains shrouded in uncertainty.
This disturbing incident echoes a backdrop of heightened vigilance in France since the wave of Islamic State terror attacks that began in January 2015. The scars from the November 2015 atrocities in Paris, where 130 lives were claimed in coordinated bombings at restaurants, the Bataclan theatre, and a football stadium, still linger. The aftermath prompted the imposition of a state of emergency, initially slated for a three-month duration.
Tragically, the end of the state of emergency was not the end of France’s ordeal. In a horrific incident in Nice, a jihadi drove a truck through a crowded sea-front, claiming the lives of at least 84 people in July. The assailant’s method was coupled with gunfire aimed at the unsuspecting crowd.
Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray bore witness to another grim chapter in July, as Father Jacques Hamel fell victim to IS militants during a hostage situation at the local church. The 85-year-old clergyman met his demise when his throat was brutally slit. Swift police action resulted in the elimination of the IS-inspired attackers, 19-year-olds Adel Kermiche and Abdel Malik Petitjean, as they attempted to flee the church, leaving the community grappling with the recurring specter of terror.
