Hungarian Anti-Immigration Billboard under attack because it features Soros

The international Jewish lobby, including the official Jewish body in Hungary, the Israeli ambassador in Budapest, and George Soros, have jointly condemned a Hungarian government anti-invasion poster as “anti-Semitic”—for no other reason than the fact that it features a picture of Soros.

The posters show a large picture of the Hungarian-born Jewish émigré Soros laughing, alongside the text: “Let’s not let Soros have the last laugh”—a reference to the fact that Soros’s money is funding many of the pro-Third World organizations in Europe.

Hungary’s largest Jewish organisation, Mazsihisz, has called on Prime Minister Viktor Orban to stop the campaign, with its head Andras Heisler writing to the prime minister that the “poisonous messages harm the whole of Hungary.”

Soros himself has issued a statement saying that he is “distressed’ by the “anti-Semitic” campaign—even though it does not mention Jews at all.
“I am distressed by the current Hungarian regime’s use of anti-Semitic imagery as part of its deliberate disinformation campaign,” the 86-year-old Jew said in his statement.

Soros added that he had been “heartened that together with countless fellow citizens the leadership of the Hungarian Jewish community” had “spoken out” against the poster campaign.

Soros’s spokesman Michael Vachon called the campaign “reminiscent of Europe’s darkest hours” with “clearly anti-Semitic overtones.”
Last week, Orban accused Soros of being a “billionaire speculator” who wanted to use his wealth and civil groups that he supports to “settle a million migrants” in the European Union.

Orban and government officials say that Hungary has a policy of “zero tolerance” of anti-Semitism, and that the poster campaign is about increasing awareness of the “national security risk” posed by Soros.

On Saturday, Israel’s ambassador in Budapest Yossi Amrani also criticized the poster campaign, saying it “evokes sad memories but also sows hatred and fear.”

* It is often claimed by the uninformed that Soros was a “Nazi collaborator” during World War II. This is false. As a 13-year-old child Soros was hidden with an official of the Ministry of Agriculture. Soros’s father helped hide the official’s Jewish wife and the official agreed to let young Soros pose as his Christian godson in return. On one occasion the official went to inventory the estate of a Jewish family that had fled Hungary, and he brought the child in his charge along rather than leaving him alone in Budapest. It is this incident which has since been falsely claimed to have been his “collaboration.”
