The Christian community in the recently liberated Iraqi town of Qaraqosh is expressing hope for Donald Trump’s election victory, as they feel abandoned by the U.S. government during the terror reign of the Islamic State (ISIS). Qaraqosh, once home to over 50,000 Christian residents, fell to ISIS more than two years ago, and those who remained faced demands to pay a hefty tax, convert to Islam, or face execution.
Residents who survived the ISIS terror have criticized President Obama for not providing adequate protection when the town fell. A man in the village expressed hope that Donald Trump, a favored candidate in the town, would bring a different approach to supporting Iraqi Christians, stating, “Obama has never helped the Christians. In fact, he despises them. But we have hope in the new president, Trump.”
Father Ammar, a Catholic priest in the town, lamented the lack of U.S. involvement, saying, “The US government led by President Obama could have protected us – or at least helped us to protect ourselves. But unfortunately, Obama abandoned us and chose not to get involved.” A young girl wearing a crucifix echoed these sentiments, expressing hope that Trump would offer more assistance than Obama did.
Following the liberation of Qaraqosh, Father Ammar conducted mass in the shelled-out Church of the Immaculate Conception for the first time in two years. Despite the destruction of homes and churches, the community remains resilient, emphasizing the significance of being able to worship freely once again. The church, although still mostly in ruins, was Iraq’s largest and used to host over 3,000 people weekly for Sunday mass.
The liberation of Qaraqosh is part of ongoing efforts by Kurdish-led forces to free Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria, the two largest remaining strongholds of ISIS.
