In a departure from the traditional left-right political spectrum, this year’s American party conventions spotlighted a new divide between open and closed ideologies. Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, emphasized the need for “Americanism, not globalism,” echoing sentiments against free trade shared by the Democratic Party’s Bernie Sanders. A similar trend is observed in Europe, where politicians advocating for isolationist policies gain momentum. Populist and authoritarian parties on both ends of the spectrum have seen increased support and secured power in nine European countries.
The anti-globalization sentiment, fueled by concerns over security and terrorist attacks, poses a significant threat to the liberal world order. The recent terror attacks in France and Germany have contributed to a growing sense of insecurity, potentially bolstering the appeal of closed-world ideologies. The Brexit vote in the UK exemplifies this trend, with anti-globalists capitalizing on insular instincts and causing divisions within mainstream political parties.
To counter this rising wave of anti-globalization, a decisive response is needed. In the United States, where the stakes are high, those within the Republican Party who oppose anti-globalist sentiments should support Hillary Clinton. Clinton, having secured the Democratic nomination, must unequivocally champion openness and resist pandering to closed-world views. Her choice of Tim Kaine, a Spanish-speaking globalist, as her running mate is seen as a positive sign. However, the closeness of the polls indicates the urgency of the situation, as the future of the liberal world order hinges on Clinton’s success.
