Austria Warns It Will Leave EU if Turkey Is Allowed to Join

Populist party leader Norbert Hofer has suggested that Turkey’s potential accession to the European Union could become a catalyst for Austrians to call for an EU referendum, expressing concerns that the inclusion of Turkey in the EU might lead to Austria’s loss of autonomy.

Hofer stated, “There is one exception, however, that is if the EU decides to let Turkey join the Union. Austrians will have to be asked whether they want this.” These remarks come amid ongoing discussions between Turkey and the EU regarding the acceleration of Turkey’s application in exchange for addressing the migrant crisis.

Turkey’s EU membership has been a contentious issue, marked by challenges such as Ankara’s refusal to reform its strict terror laws, recognition of the Republic of Cyprus, and addressing Greece’s demands. Hofer emphasized his hope that a referendum would not be necessary, but he expressed certainty that Austrians would not accept Turkish membership in the EU.

He urged the EU to “learn lessons” from the Brexit referendum and stressed the importance of creating a European Union that prioritizes the interests of its citizens over bureaucratic concerns.

The remarks by Hofer follow the recent news that he will have another opportunity to become the first far-right head of state in an EU country after the Freedom Party won its appeal.

The initial results of Austria’s presidential elections favored Hofer, but he was narrowly defeated after counting absentee votes, with former Greens leader Alexander Van der Bellen securing victory.
