The harrowing story of how one 18-year-old student survived the Oregon college shooting by playing dead has been revealed.
Anastasia Boylan was in a classroom on her fourth day studying at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon when Chris Harper-Mercer entered and shot her professor dead point-blank.
She told her family that he told his victims to stand up and declare their religion, before telling them: ‘Good, because you’re a Christian, you’re going to see God in just about one second.’
He then shot his victims, including Anastasia, who told her father she survived by playing dead. She underwent surgery on Thursday after doctors found a bullet lodged in her spine, but was strong enough to speak with her family before the operation.
Her father Stacy Boylan told CNN that Harper-Mercer was targeting Christians.
‘He came in and there was gunfire. He secured the room and got their attention. He shot her professor point-blank. One shot killed him.’
As he was comforted by his son, Boylan added that Harper-Mercer as he reloaded his handgun, ordered his victims to stand if they were Christians.
‘And then he shot and killed them.’
“Kortney Moore, 18, told the Roseburg News-Review that she was in a Writing 115 class when one shot came through the window. Moore said she saw her teacher get shot in the head. The shooter then reportedly told the students to get on the ground before asking people to stand up and state their religion. He then began firing,” that report stated.
High school student Autumn Vicari told NBC News her 19-year-old brother J.J. was in a room filled with students at the college when the gunman entered.
“According to her brother’s account, Vicari said at one point the shooter told people to stand up before asking whether they were Christian or not.
“Vicari’s brother told her that anyone who responded “yes” was shot in the head. If they said “other” or didn’t answer, they were shot elsewhere in the body, usually the leg. Vicari said her brother managed to escape but watched as three people were later killed in another room.”
Another survivor in the classroom, Rand McGowan, shared a similar story of what transpired, according to his mother. “Do you have a God?” McGowan’s mother, Stephanie Salas, was quoted as saying, relating what her son had told her. “Are you Christian? Do you have a religion?”
There is also a Twitter user named @bodhilooney, who said her grandmother was at the scene of the carnage, tweeted that if victims said they were Christian, “then they were shot in the head. If they said no, or didn’t answer, they were shot in the legs.”
