Ukrainian president has accused Moscow of backing pro-Russia forces in the east of the country with thousands of troops.

Petro Poroshenko said on Wednesday that more than 9,000 troops have been sent by Russia to support the militancy in the eastern regions.

“We have more than 9,000 troops of the Russian Federation on my territory, including more than 500 tanks and heavy artillery and armed personnel carriers,” Poroshenko said, addressing a gathering of influential leaders at World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday.

The remarks by Poroshenko come as fighting has erupted again in east Ukraine where the pro-Russia fighters and government forces have completely ignored a shaky ceasefire signed in September.

New clashes in Ukraine’s southeastern regions killed at least six people on Wednesday, while pro-Russia forces continued battling Kiev troops over an airport in the self-declared Donetsk Republic.

On Monday, authorities in Kiev accused Russia of sending around 700 troops to an area in Donetsk. Russian Defense Ministry rejected the claims calling them “absolute nonsense” and “hallucination.”

Russia has repeatedly denied sending troops or weapons to pro-Russia forces fighting the government in east Ukraine.
