Congressman Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) is facing a backlash after he urged military leaders to rebel against President Barack Obama’s foreign policy by resigning their positions.
As we reported last week, during a political event held at a Colorado Springs bar, Lamborn told an audience that he was working with other members of Congress in talking to military generals behind the scenes, urging them to resign “in a blaze of glory” as a protest against the White House’s middle east policy.
“A lot of us are talking to the generals behind the scenes, saying, ‘Hey, if you disagree with the policy that the White House has given you, let’s have a resignation,’” said Lamborn, according to Cory Hutchins, who attended the meeting.
In the aftermath of his comments, Lamborn was on the receiving end of a deluge of condemnation, notably from Colorado Springs City Councilwoman Jill Gaebler, who tweeted, “Lamborn is an embarrassment to our service members and to the great state of #Colorado.”
U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Yuma echoed Gaebler’s sentiments, asserting, “There is no room for partisan politics when it comes to our men and women in uniform.”
The Congressman also faced heat from leftist media outlets, with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow making Lamborn a subject of ridicule, while Newsweek’s Kurt Eichenwald said Lamborn was, “the latest type of political muck America needs to scrape off the bottom of its national shoe.”
After his comments attracted controversy, Lamborn backtracked, insisting he was addressing old Obama administration policies, such as sequestration in 2013 and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 2010.
