Russia’s envoy to NATO has criticized the Western military alliance after it announced a full review of cooperation with Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.

On Wednesday, Alexander Grushko said NATO was applying double standards to Russia by trying to pressure Moscow into backing down on Ukraine.

“This meeting proved that NATO still has a double standard policy. And Cold War stereotypes are still applied towards Russia,” Grushko told reporters after a meeting of NATO and Russian officials to discuss tensions in Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced the review of “an entire range” of military cooperation with Russia on Wednesday.

The NATO chief added that the western military alliance will intensify its partnership with Ukraine by helping to boost Ukraine’s army.

Rasmussen said the crisis in Ukraine presents serious implications for the security of the region.

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Washington would boost military cooperation with Poland and Baltic states to show solidarity with its allies amid the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

“The Defense Department is pursuing measures to support our allies,” Hagel told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Political crisis erupted in Ukraine in November 2013 after the country’s ousted president, Viktor Yanukovych, refrained from signing an Association Agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia.

On February 23, the Ukrainian parliament ousted Yanukovych and named Oleksandr Turchynov, the legislature’s newly-elected speaker, as interim president.
