343034 Russia Times Year

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been named the International Person of the Year by one of Britain’s most influential newspapers for his role in bringing Russia back to the world stage.

The Times wrote on Monday that Putin “succeeded in one of his most enduring ambitions: to bring Moscow back to the international high table.”

The Russian president took the newspaper’s top prize for his list of accomplishments in global politics including humiliating the United States by granting asylum to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and brokering a Syrian chemical weapons deal that averted a US strike.

Putin granted asylum to Snowden, who revealed information on top-secret spying programs run by the US government.

On September 14, Russia and the US agreed on a deal according to which Syria would have its chemical weapons eliminated and the US would in return not carry out planned strikes on the Arab country.

Putin also sealed a landmark economic and trade agreement with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in mid December, circumventing the European Union by offering Kiev a $15-billion bailout and a price discount for gas supplies.

In October, Forbes magazine replaced US President Barack Obama with Putin at the top of the chart of the Worlds’ Most Powerful People.

Putin was also named Person of the Year by the US Time magazine in 2007.

But in all fairness, George Bush jr. was a terribe President to.
