Thousands of French hold anti-Hollande protest in Paris

Thousands of protesters in France have marched through the capital Paris against the country’s President Francois Hollande.

On Sunday, the protesters took to the streets of the city and staged a rally named ‘A Day of Rage’ in order to show their anger at Hollande’s presidency.

According to reports, French security forces fired teargas to disperse the protesters who lobbed police with bottles, fireworks, iron bars and dustbins.

The rally comes at a time when the 59-year-old embattled president is under fire at home over his policies. The demonstrators called for the repeal of the law and urged respect for the freedom of speech in the country.

Hollande, who took office in May 2012 with pledges of economic and foreign policy reforms, has become the most unpopular French president on record as he has failed to fulfill the promises he made during his election campaign.

The French president had pledged to reduce the unemployment rate and cut economic problems.

A recent poll, conducted by Ipsos-Steria and published by the French newspaper Le Mond, indicated some 85 percent of respondents were convinced that France is currently in a state of pessimism.

Moreover, a survey conducted by French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) has indicated that Hollande’s approval rating has dropped to 20 percent.

The survey, published by the French weekly newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche in November last year, found that the reported 20-percent popularity rating is the worst level recorded for a French president since the poll started in 1958.

On November 11, 2013, Hollande was jeered and booed by protesters during an Armistice Day memorial ceremony in Paris over his controversial economic policies and the country’s growing unemployment.

An opinion poll published on November 3, 2013, showed that over 90 percent of French people want Hollande to change his policies and performance before local elections in 2014.
