A Spanish court has charged Princess Cristina, the younger daughter of King Juan Carlos, with tax fraud and money laundering amid a lengthy corruption case involving her husband.

Judge Jose Castro, an examining magistrate in Palma de Mallorca, announced the decision on Tuesday, saying there was evidence that Cristina had committed crimes.

According to Spanish media, Cristina is scheduled to appear in court on March 8 to answer questions regarding the so-called Caso Noos corruption case, which involves her husband, Inaki Urdagarin.

Cristina’s spouse has been charged with fraud, tax evasion, falsifying documents and embezzling six million euros in public funds as head of the charitable Noos Foundation.

The princess was on the board of the foundation and together with Urdagarin, they owned a real estate firm, Aizoon, which investigators suspect was used to launder the embezzled funds.

Cristina and Urdagarin both deny that they have done any wrongdoing. The princess is expected to appeal the charges against her.

The judge’s decision to summon Cristina comes just days after a poll showed that fewer than half of Spaniards, or 41 percent, support the monarchy in general.

The poll published by Spanish newspaper El Mundo on January 5 also showed that nearly two-thirds of Spaniards want Carlos to abdicate.

Carlos has also seen his popularity plunge over the past three years due to the corruption scandal and also criticism that the monarchy is out of touch with ordinary people.

Last year, Carlos was criticized for a lavish elephant-hunting trip to Africa in 2012 while his citizens were struggling with a steep recession and record-high unemployment.
