329222 Sydney protest rally

A large group of protesters, mostly Australian-Syrian youths, have staged a rally in Sydney to voice their solidarity with the Syrian government, nation and army, Press TV reports.

The protesters took to the streets at Sydney’s Martin Place Amphitheatre, calling for an end to foreign intervention in the violence-stricken country.

Reme Sakr, an organizer of the event, dubbed Hands off Syria, told Press TV that similar protest rallies were held in the Australian cities of Adelaide and Brisbane as well as the island of Tasmania.

Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar al-Ja’afari addressed the crowd via Skype and expressed gratitude to the protesters for their unwavering faith in the Syrian nation. He also called on the demonstrators to continue their support for the Arab country.

Tim Anderson, a political academic and senior lecturer from the University of Sydney, who was among the participants in the rally, underlined the need for Canberra to make decisions regarding Syria independently from the United States and call for a peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis.

Earlier in October, the Australian government announced it would resettle 500 Syrian refugees as part of its humanitarian refugee program in response to a request by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting militants operating inside the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the foreign-sponsored violence.
