Many have been forced to leave their homes after several train cars containing chemicals derailed and caused a major fire near the Belgian city of Gent.

On Saturday, Belgian authorities evacuated nearly 300 residents living near the site of the accident after the blaze led to a series of explosions in the railway cars.

Infrabel, the entity responsible for the Belgian railway network, said nobody was hurt in the accident which occurred at around 2:00 am (0000 GMT) between the towns of Schellebelle and Wetteren.

The accident caused disruption in train services between Schellebelle and Wetteren.

The train came from the Netherlands and was bound for Gent-Zeehaven, the city’s seaport.

Also in May 2012, authorities in the Belgian region of Wallonia evacuated schools after a freight train accidentally rammed the rear of another one, which was transporting toxic chemicals.
