The 16th Amendment gave Congress only the power to tax income, but no general taxing power, and taxing the failure to buy health insurance is a power that Congress did not have, so the court decision was incorrect and unconstitutional.

An intellectually-corrupt Supreme Court has rapidly lost the respect that court needs in order for its decisions to be accepted. When courts ignore the constitutional provisions limiting federal power, the people themselves are the last line of defense when they refuse to obey the decision. Fortunately, many states are resisting that decision, rejecting Obamacare, and ignoring federal offers of money to comply.

If the federal government ever does acquire police powers of the states, the U.S. can no longer claim to be a republic or a democracy. There is nothing democratic about a federal dictatorship.
