North Korea says Washington should be ‘acutely aware’ that the US mainland is within the range of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons.
A member of the Korean National Peace Committee said in an article posted on the official website Uriminzokkiri on Wednesday that Washington should be “acutely aware that the US mainland is now well within the range of our strategic rockets and nuclear weapons.”
North Korea is currently a “fully-independent rocket and nuclear weapons state,” the article stated.
On February 12, North Korea announced that it had successfully carried out its third underground nuclear test, which involved a “miniaturized” device and was conducted in a “perfect manner.”
The nuclear test drew immediate condemnation from the UN and several countries including the United States, South Korea, Russia and Japan.
In response to the atomic test, US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said that North Korea should expect “increasing isolation and pressure.”
On December 12, 2012, Pyongyang also announced that it had launched a long-range rocket from the Sohae Satellite Launching Station and successfully placed a satellite into orbit. The UN Security Council condemned Pyongyang for the rocket launch.
Washington and its allies also said the North Korean rocket launch had been a cover for testing an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.
On February 21, North Korea said countries that had bowed to the US pressure to abandon their nuclear plans had suffered “tragic consequences.”
North Korea also carried out two nuclear tests on October 9, 2006 and May 25, 2009.
