Entry into the Union was voluntary, so exit from the Union should have been voluntary. Lincoln had no right to demand the Confederate states to remain part of the Union. If Russia had made a similar demand of the Baltic states, the U.N. membership would have condemned it. Lincoln had no legal basis to prevent secession of the states. Article 10 of the constitution reserved all unlisted powers to the states and the people, which would include the power to leave the Union because there was no mention of secession in the constitution.

A very small federal government would limit opportunities for corruption, and have less affect on the states and the citizens.

Part of America’s deterioration is the ability of government to borrow fantastically large amounts of money, with the borrowers (Congress) determining their own debt limit. And part of the problem is the tax code that gives the government a percentage of income rather than a specific sum divided equally among the states.

My view is that the states created the federal government, the constitution was written to limit the size of the federal government, so the 16th amendment, the income tax amendment, should refer solely to the states who should be funding the federal government, not the citizens.

Nothing in the 16th amendment specifies WHO is to pay the tax. As the states formed that government, it would be the states responsibility to fund their creation.

Assessing the states a share of the cost of federal government would require a much smaller federal government exactly as contemplated by the writers of the constitution.

America needs decentralization of government, and a transfer of power back to the states, and that will slowly happen as the fed’s excesses are rejected by state legislatures.

Every re-elected president has had 8 terms of Congress to convince the people’s representatives to enact his ideas, and if they are rejecting the president’s ideas 8 years in succession, then the president should find other employment.

Now if a president is so dumb that he wants to be president for life, he deserves to be impeached.
