US auto giant, General Motors, has decided to stop car production at a plant of the troubled and loss-making German carmaker, Opel, after 2016.

Bochum plant, which reportedly employs 3,000 people and currently manufactures Opel Zafira model, would remain in operation until the end of the compact MPV’s production run.

Opel has three other German factories. Its main plant is in Russelsheim and other plants are in Kaiserslautern, western Germany, and Eisenach, central Germany.

Ruesselsheim factory employs a workforce of 13,800, with 3,500 in production, 3,300 in administration and a further 7,000 in engineering.

Kaiserslautern plant, which makes components, employs a workforce of 2,500.
