Tensions have risen in the Greek capital city of Athens over a blasphemous American play which portrays Jesus Christ as homosexual.
Late on Friday, police briefly arrested more than 30 people outside an Athens theatre, where the play Corpus Christi was staged, who were calling on authorities to ban the show.
Also on Thursday, the Greece’s nationalist Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) Party had sent several members, including some of its lawmakers, to block the doors of the theatre and turn away spectators.
“This is a blasphemous play,” lawmaker Ilias Panagiotaros told reporters.
Originally staged in New York in 1998, the play which is written by American dramatist Terrence McNally, depicts Jesus Christ and his Apostles as homosexuals living in modern-day Texas.
The play is the latest in a wave of blasphemous movies and cartoons which insult Holy prophets.
On September 11, anti-US demonstrations began over a blasphemous movie made in the US which disrespected Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The movie was followed by sacrilegious cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by French weekly Charlie Hebdo on September 19.
