Argentinians have held a demonstration in the capital to protest against government policies and a recent proposal that could allow Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to run for a third consecutive term in 2015.
Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in front of the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires on Thursday.
The pro-government movement Carta Abierta (Open Letter) recently proposed the initiative, but it has not been approved yet. Under Argentina’s constitution, Fernandez cannot run for a third consecutive term in 2015.
The demonstrators carried placards reading, “No to reelection,” to show their opposition to the proposal.
They also banged on pots and pans in a symbolic move, referring to the country’s economic crisis in 2001-2002.
In addition, the protesters condemned the government policy to put a limit on purchasing foreign currencies.
In 2001, Buenos Aires implemented measures to limit foreign currency purchases and control the foreign exchange to safeguard the monetary reserves and to become able to repay the country’s debts.
Meanwhile, similar demonstrations were also held in several other cities, including Mendoza, Cordoba and Rosario.
Fernandez was sworn in to a second term in December 2011.
