The UN has sent a team to North Korea for expressing their solidarity with the government and people in the wake of the recent flood, a UN official says.

The UN team was headed “to see what help if any, the UN country team can provide”, said UNICEF’s Bangkok-based regional official Christopher de Bono.

Referring to UN’s previous visit in November, Bono added that at least three million people would need food aid this year.

According to Pyongyang’s official news agency KCNA, south of Pyongyang was hit the hardest while the typhoon has damaged 17,000 houses, rendering up to 63,000 people homeless.

The report added that North Korea’s floods follow the most severe drought in over 100 years.

The floods also caused inundation of 4,800 hectares of cropland, while destroying most roads and a host of bridges across the country.

Widespread deforestation may be one of the principal causes of the most severe floods to hit the North Korea in the last years.
