Italy’s second fatal earthquake in just over a week has killed at least 16 people and injured 350 others in the northern region of Emilia Romagna.

At least 14,000 people have also been displaced since a strong earthquake measuring 5.8 struck northern Italy on Tuesday morning, local security officials reported.

The rescuing teams combed through the debris near Modena, one of the worst-hit areas, and pulled a 65-year-old woman alive 12 hours after the quake.

Government undersecretary Antonio Catricala said Tuesday that Prime Minister Mario Monti decided to declare June 4 a national day of mourning for the victims of Emilia Romagna tremors.

Catricala also said that the emergency cabinet meeting will be held on Wednesday to plan a series of relief measures for the affected people.

The Tuesday quake comes only nine days after another deadly tremor in the same area that left 10 people dead and at least 7,000 homeless.

The May 20 quake was described by experts as the worst to hit the region since the 1300s, causing over 200 million euros worth of damage.

A number of historic castles, centuries-old churches and towers were also destroyed or damaged by the quakes and their aftershocks during the past weeks.
