Incumbent French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he will not make any deal with the far-right and pro-Russia candidate Marine Le Pen who stood third in the first round of the presidential polls.
“There will be no pact with the National Front,” Sarkozy said in an interview with France Info radio on Wednesday.
However, the French president underlined the need for a talk with the 18 percent who voted for Marine Le Pen.
After losing the first round of the presidential election to his Socialist rival Francois Hollande, Sarkozy needs to get the support of the extreme far-right voters in order to stay in the Elysee palace for a second term.
Although Sarkozy expressed his will to “talk” (steal) National Front’s votes and denied any chance of collaboration between the two parties, political writer Diana Johnson however has told RT that Marine herself will prefer to support Francois Hollande.
“She said she wants to be the leader of the opposition. Now that Sarkozy will fail, she will become the leader of the right opposition to the left-wing government,” she explained.
Both Sarkozy and his Socialist challenger are eying more than six million voters who picked the National Front party candidate Le Pen in the first round.
The second round of the 2012 French presidential election will be held on May 6.
