US President Barack Obama

Barack Obama once again signs a presidential order to extend for another year American sanctions, dating back to 1995, against Iran, as he considers the Iranian government a threat to US national security, foreign policy and economy.

“Because the actions and policies of the government of Iran continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States, the national emergency declared on March 15, 1995, must continue in effect beyond March 15, 2012,” Obama wrote on Tuesday.

Obama said that the renewed order is pursuant to a May 6, 1995 Executive Order by former US President Bill Clinton, “imposing more comprehensive sanctions to further respond to this (Iranian) threat.”

Since 1995, American presidents have annually extended the anti-Iran sanctions.

“Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 USC 1622(d)), I am continuing for one year the national emergency with respect to Iran,” he added.

The latest anti-Iran move comes despite the fact that the illegal US economic and political sanctions against the Islamic Republic have not been endorsed by the United Nations Security Council and target the Iranian nation and its national interests.
