Furthermore, DU rounds do not ‘ignite’ and explode into a ‘thermonuclear’ explosion on impact as the author stated. The uranium is DEPLETED! That means it can’t sustain a fission reaction – ie no nuclear explosion!

The reason DU is used is because it’s nearly twice as heavy as lead for the same volume. The means that in munitions used in such attack aircraft as the A-10 (with it’s tank busting rotary canon) the shells have a higher sectional density and penetrate armor in a much more efficient manner.

That all being said, DU is toxic; when the rounds strike a hard object such as armor they would break up spewing out a certain amount of low level radioactive material into the local area.
