The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman says his country hopes that stability will continue in the strategic Strait of Hormuz and no action will be taken to destabilize this international waterway.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Hung Lei said Chinese public opinion is very sensitive about developments in Iran.
Asked about escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf which have pushed up international oil prices, he said, “China hopes that peace and stability can be maintained in the strait.”
His remarks came after repeated warning by Tehran that the country can respond to proposed Western oil sanctions and threats against Iran by choking oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi warned on Tuesday, December 27, that imposition of oil sanctions against the Islamic Republic will prompt Tehran to prevent oil cargoes from passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
“If they impose sanctions on Iran’s oil, not even a drop of oil will be allowed through the Strait of Hormuz,” he added.
Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari also announced on Wednesday that the country’s naval forces can readily block the strategic Strait of Hormuz if need be.
Iran’s Navy is currently conducting a massive 10-day naval drill, codenamed “Velayat 90”, in an area stretching from the east of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden.
