A US Republican presidential candidate has reproached Washington’s policy toward Iran, saying more sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear program is a mistake.
Ron Paul added, Iran is not a threat to the United States.
The Texas congressman opposed the bill passed by the House Foreign Affairs Committee last week that would toughen sanctions against Iran and noted that, “When you put on strong sanctions, those are acts of war”.
The United States, the Israeli regime and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program.
The UN Security Council has already imposed four rounds of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. Washington and the European Union have also adopted unilateral measures against Iran, meant to deter Western investment in the country’s energy sector.
Iran argues that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
