Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has warned Bangkok residents of more flooding, saying that the nation’s current situation could continue for another six weeks.
The prime minister’s remarks come as efforts to drain billions of cubic meters of water to the sea through rivers and canals are underway, AFP reported.
“Bangkok must open all floodgates to allow the water through,” Yingluck said on Saturday, warning residents to “move belongings, cars, and other valuable things to places at least one meter (three feet) high.”
More than 1,000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes in the northern Bangkok districts of Don Mueang and Lak Si.
Three months of heavy monsoon rains have killed over 300 people in northern and central Thailand.
The revised forecast for the growth of Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) this year stands at 3.6 percent instead of the previously-projected 4.4 percent because of the floods, according to Thailand’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting.
Flooding has also hit other countries in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, where some 250 people have died. The death toll in Vietnam stands at over 40.
Worst-hit areas are reported to be the Vietnamese-Cambodian river border, with autumn and winter rice plantations being flooded.
