Apple founder Steve Jobs dies

Steve Jobs, the billionaire co-founder of the technology giant, Apple Inc., has died at the age of 56, succumbing to pancreatic cancer, says a brief company statement.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” AFP quoted the company’s board of directors as saying in the statement.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve,” the statement added.

Jobs resigned from his post as the company’s chief executive in August.

In his resignation letter, he wrote, “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Jobs revealed in 2004 that he suffered from cancer and in 2009 he underwent a liver transplant.

His next of kin said in a statement that he “died peacefully today surrounded by his family … We know of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.”

Apple was founded by Jobs and Steve Wozniak, one of his high-school friends, in a garage in Silicon Valley in North California in 1976. Over the years, the company grew to become one of the biggest multinational corporations that designed and marketed consumer electronics, computers software, and personal computers.

Apple is best known for its hardware products iPod, iPhone and iPad.
