A train-bus crash in Buenos Aires has killed nine people and injured 212 others.

At least 9 people have died and 212 injured in Buenos Aires when a train hit a bus which was then crashed into another train head-on.

Alberto Crescenti, the director general of Argentina’s emergency medical system, said that at least 20 of the injured were in critical condition, The Associated Press reported on Tuesday.

Argentine Transportation Secretary J.P. Schiavi said that the accident happened at 6:15 a.m. local time (5:15 a.m. EDT; 0915 GMT).

“It was one of the saddest, most serious accidents in recent years,” said fire chief Omar Bravo.

According to Argentina’s national transportation regulator, 440 people and 165 vehicles were hit by trains in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area last year, causing 269 deaths.

In Buenos Aires, the passenger rail system in most neighborhoods moves at street level, causing a potentially dangerous situation for careless drivers of buses and other vehicles.
