People gather at the scene after a suicide bomb explosion at the Police force headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria on June 16, 2011.

At least 20 people have been killed and several others injured in a fresh wave of violence in the troubled northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri.

A blast went off near a police barracks on Sunday, killing ten people and injuring several others that are reportedly in critical condition, AFP reported.

Hours earlier, leading politician of All Nigeria People Party Mustapha Ba’le was shot to death near his house in another part of the same city and nine others, including three police officers, were killed in a wave of shooting overnight Saturday.

“The bomb was planted at the middle of the ‘mammy market’ and at least 10 people have been killed and several others seriously injured from the explosion,” said an army officer who preferred not to be named.

Troops from the joint task force were deployed to the area shortly after the blast while the entire area was condoned off immediately.

Nigerian police have pointed the finger of blame at militant group Boko Haram, which has also been accused of involvement in a similar attack last Sunday, killing at least 25 people and wounded 30 others.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a bomb attack on police headquarters in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on June 16, killing at least two, including a policeman.

Police officers, soldiers, politicians and clerics in northern Nigeria have reportedly been the main target of attacks by Boko Haram elements in the past year.
