Yet if the fight were not engaged, it is certain the outcome would be different.
Would communism have collapsed? Would we be friends with Vietnam now or still have a smoldering unresolved animosity as with north Korea? Ignorance assumes that the current situation is what would be if we had never engaged the North Vietnamese. People need to be free, and a fight, even as it appears lost, is today giving freedom to Koreans, Vietnamese, Iraquis and others…the appreciation of that benefit is delayed, but surely comes, for the sacrifice is never in vain.
