Sounds, tastes and visions of Africa will be prominent in Limerick at the end of this month as the city celebrates Africa Day.
Minister of State for Trade and Development Jan O’Sullivan, has launched a programme of cultural and community events to mark Africa Day, with events taking place in Limerick, Dublin, and Galway.
There are some 1,200 people of African origin living in Limerick, according to the 2006 Census.
Africa Day, an initiative of the African Union, falls on May 25 each year and celebrates African diversity, as well as the cultural and economic potential of the continent.
“This presents a great opportunity for communities to join with people from all over Africa to celebrate their cultures and traditions. We hope that other organisations involved in education and awareness-raising will organise and participate in events all around the country,” said Deputy O’Sullivan.
Family fun days, an African bazaar, public debates, food-tasting and sports activities are among the events taking place in Dublin, Limerick and Galway over the coming weeks to celebrate Africa Day 2011.
“Ireland has developed strong connections with Africa over many years, not least those forged by Irish missionaries and non- governmental organisation. More recently, we have seen an increase in trade and business links, while many African communities here are making an invaluable contribution to Irish society,” she said.
In Limerick on Sunday, May 29, there will be a day of events at City Hall and the Milk Market which will feature diverse African musicians, a cultural corner, food fairs, an African Bazaar, sports activities, and arts and crafts.
Doras Luimni, the local support group for all migrants, will also host a public screening of the film Africa United on Wednesday, May 25, in the Loft venue.

Why should Ireland celebrate “Africa Day?” It’s a scheme to erase Irish identity. Greedy politicians and businesspeople want to flood Ireland with immigrants to gain votes, and cheap labor. Thus politicians are not accountable to the indigenous Irish and job opportunities are lost.
I suppose Ireland might as well celebrate Africa Day
because it no longer has a culture or traditions of its own. It’s becoming a hodge-podge of DIVERSITY; what a travesty of the Ireland that was once know as the island of Saints and Scholars!
