A federal jury on Monday convicted a former research scientist of stealing trade secrets from Dow Chemical Co.

A federal jury on Monday convicted a former research scientist of stealing trade secrets from Dow Chemical Co and selling them to companies in China, US prosecutors said.

Wen Chyu Liu, a 74-year-old Chinese-American, former Dow employee, allegedly travelled throughout China to market proprietary information about Dow’s synthetic materials used in automobiles and housing construction.

A federal jury in Baton Rouge, the capital of the southern state of Louisiana, convicted Liu, who also is known as David Liou, of one count of conspiracy to commit trade secret theft and one count of perjury.

He faces more than 10 years in prison. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.

Evidence presented during the three-week trial showed that Liu conspired with at least four current and former employees, prosecutors said. He allegedly once bribed a then-employee with US$50,000 (S$63,700) to obtain information.

Liu, a resident of Houston, Texas, came to the United States from China for postgraduate studies. He worked for Dow from 1965 to 1992. Dow Chemical is the largest agrochemical and biotechnology company in the United States. Liu also faces $500,000 in fines.
