In days of celebrating the Jewish Hanukkah, Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych has refused to attend a synagogue religious ceremony and light the Hanukkah candles. As the deputy head of Presidential Administration of Ukraine, Anna Herman, Viktor Yanukovych congratulated Jews with their holiday, but decided that it was best not to join in a synagogue.
The Ukrainian president said he respects all the holidays of national minorities in Ukraine. Mr. Viktor always goes to the Church in which he was baptized and spent his childhood. The president does not choose his faith according to what it can give him later. His life does not depend on how much time he will spend as a state leader”, said Anna Herman.
Earlier, Ukraine’s chief rabbi Moshe Reuven Azman said he hoped that Viktor Yanukovych will visit Jewish central synagogue from Kiev on the occasion of Hanukkah. “All presidents in various countries have always come to the celebration of Hanukkah and lit candles. I hope that Viktor Yanukovych will visit us.” said the Ukrainian chief rabbi. And he told of a belief according to which the president, who will light a candle in the synagogue at Hanukkah, is reelected for a second term if he so desires, the website Segodnya.ua.
The chief rabbi also told a story in which a president that lights a candle in a synagogue for Hanukkah, will get his second term (elected as a president again) if he wishes.
Yanukovych’s administration joked about the rabbi’s story of how to obtain a second term and replied to him: “We need to know, did Yushchenko light a candle?”.
The story of a self-fulfilling wish of the rabbi’s second term in the Administration Yanukovych edition jokingly replied: “We need to know, did Yushchenko light a candle?”.
