The first peek at the next-generation AMD graphics offerings.

AMD will be back on the GPU offensive this fall with new offerings. According to DigiTimes, Radeon HD 6000-series will launch first with the HD 6700, which will replace the market currently occupied by the Radeon HD 5770 and 5750. They will probably hit the stores starting with November 2010.

While AMD’s exact launch plans are still unknown, today we get to see some supposed leaks thanks to Chinese source Chiphell. Posted on the forums are pictures of Cayman and Caicos engineering samples, which are believed to be the “Cayman XT” Radeon HD 6870.

AMD looks set to release their eagerly awaited next generation of Radeons next week, with CEO Dirk Meyer confirming in an earnings call that the latest graphics card would be arriving.

Meyer was quoted by Anandtech as saying that the wait for the new DX11 cards would be days away.

“We will be launching our second-generation DX11 graphics offerings next week,” said Meyer.

Big hit

The 5000 series has been a massive hit for AMD – as being the first DirectX 11 supporting cards pushed the company’s offering to a new level.

The successors will represent another big push for AMD – which has scrapped the ATI branding of late.

“We’ll be introducing our second-generation of DX11 technology into the market with some launch activities actually next week,” added Meyer.

“We’ll be shipping all the family members of that product line I’ll call it, by the end of this quarter, and total volume think in terms of several hundred thousand, or hundreds of thousands of units.”

There is also mention of the AMD HD3D technology (for 3D gaming) and support for CrossFireX and Eyefinity. Of course, all of these assets revolve around the Barts (XT) graphics processing unit, based on the 40nm manufacturing process technology.

Western Digital Caviar Green Hard Drive WD30EZRS

In other news, Western Digital and Seagate just released their new 3TB HDDs.

Western Digital’s drive is called Caviar Green 3TB WD30EZRS, has a buffer of 64MB, 5400rpm and its available at $299, while Seagate’s drive is called FreeAgent GoFlex 3TB Black External Hard Drive STAC3000100 has a buffer of 32MB, 7200rpm and its available at $200.

Along with the 3TB drive, Western Digital will also release a 2.5TB drive called WD25EZRS at a lower price somewhere in November.

For now, Western Digital’s drive is internal while Seagate’s drive is external but they will most likely release new models in November 2010. Segate will release an LP (Low Power) consumption drive with 5400rpm and Western Digital will release a “Black” drive, which means a faster version with 7200rpm but with higher power consumption.

The two other main Asian competitors, Samsung and Hitachi did not announced a 3TB version yet.

There are also news in the CPU arena.

Not long ago AMD released its first 6 core CPU called Phenom II X6. Intel too has released a 6 core CPU called Intel Core i7 980X which is much faster than its AMD counterpart but at a higher price. Most benchmarks reveal Phenom II X6 1090T as a weak CPU which is beaten even by Intel’s 4 core CPUs. Unfortunately for AMD, its 6 core based 1090T CPU doesn’t stand a chance against Intel’s Core i7 980X.

AMD’s 6 core CPU, 1090T is available at $260 while Intel’s 6 core CPU, Core i7 980X is available at $999. If you want a cheap but powerful CPU you should go for AMD’s Phenom II X6. Although it’s not a match for Intel, it’s still a powerful processor and an option. If money isn’t a problem for you and you’re only interested in ultimate processing power, then you should definitely go for Intel. The 980x trumps the X6 1090T more than double.
