Amid a festering financial crisis in Europe, the unemployment rate across countries using the euro currency has jumped to a historic %10.1 in April.
According to statistics released by the European Union, almost 16 million people living in the Eurozone countries are currently out of jobs.
The figures are showing a significant increase in the number of laid-off workers in April compared to figures published in March.
The upward trend is believed to be the highest since the Euro was adopted as the currency for 16 EU member states on January 1, 1999.
The statistics also indicate that almost 1.3 million more people in the Eurozone are out of work compared to the same period last year.
The report comes as Europe has been grappling with a deepening financial crisis. Furthermore, many European stock markets plummeted earlier this week.
More than 23.3 million people were estimated to be unemployed in April — up from 20.9 million last year — in the 27-member European bloc.
