IT IS a magazine cover that will make the hearts of Australian university bosses and diplomats sink.
“Why the Aussies hate us” screams the cover of this week’s influential Indian news magazine Outlook.
The 10-page coverage includes stories of young Indian victims of violence and racial abuse and describes how Indian students in Melbourne feel afraid on the streets.
Van Thanh Rudd, an anti-racism activist and Kevin Rudd’s nephew – recently criticised for wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit to protest against attacks on Indians – told Outlook the “dominant culture in Australia” was racist, and that he had no doubt the attacks had been racially motivated.
The magazine quotes far-right politicians and says it has found ”evidence that ‘curry-bashing’ is becoming a fun game for white Australians”. Outlook, a centre-left weekly, is one of India’s top-selling English-language magazines with a circulation of 1.5 million and a big online following.
The story was introduced on the Outlook website with the headline “Anatomy of hate”. The report is the latest in a stream of negative publicity about violence against Indians in Australia.
There are signs the Indian government is increasingly impatient with Australia’s response. The External Affairs Minister, S.M.Krishna, met the Australian Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith, in London twice last week. An Indian government statement said Mr Krishna told Mr Smith it was increasingly difficult to accept the attacks were devoid of any racial motives and that he complained there had ”been no visible progress so far into most of the investigations”.
The editor-in-chief of Outlook, Vinod Mehta, defended the coverage and denied allegations that the Indian media were overreacting. He told the Herald: “We sent two correspondents to Australia and they found that an overwhelming number of these incidents were racial and they found that Indians in Australia live in fear. There is tremendous outrage in this country. I don’t think the Australians realise that.”
Mr Mehta said one reason for the anger was the “smug and superior attitude of the Australian government for denying there was racism and then telling the Indians not to hype this up”.
Mr Mehta said he published the story with great regret.
“I like Australia a great deal but you have to see there is a problem, and by denying it you won’t get anywhere.”
The story includes comments by right-wing groups in Australia. Outlook quotes Jim Saleam, the head of the anti-immigration party Australia First, that Indians are ”becoming a serious threat to white Australians in the job market”. Bob Vinnicombe of One Nation is quoted as saying Australia ”should actively encourage bringing in Christians and white people from Zimbabwe and South Africa”.
But the magazine does not report that three people charged with the murder of Ranjodh Singh were Indian nationals.
Reports about attacks on Indians have damaged Australia’s $15 billion a year international education industry.

India and it’s men are disgusting. I met an Indian man who is a Hindu who already had a long time girlfriend in America who knew nothing until I told her. I am in Germany. His name is “Anmol Chandon” or “Nikka Anmol”. He cheats lies and is a lying piece of shite. He took photos of our visit to show his friends and used me. He uses online dating sites to find women all over the world and con them. He uses them to stay with or have sex usually until they see him in person……. He is disgusting with bad hygiene and clogged pores all over, very short, and dirty. He is doesn’t deserve any woman and all need to beware. He preys on innocent white women, filipinos, and anything with fair skin…. spreading herpes and worse. He is a coward and swine. :-8
I have an indian friend who can be counted as one of the hundreds from what I can understand, who was too afraid to report the beatings he took when he was in australia. He was assaulted on 3 separate occasions, and his indian friend on 2 separate occasions over their 2 year stay in Sydney. Each incident was carried out by local australians who were apparently on a night out ‘curry bashing’ (whatever that means?!)
My friend had to eventually leave australia and move to the US since after the third beating he lost the use of his right hand (they broke his fingers) and couldn’t get a job (he is a computer IT guy) in Australia.
He is now happily working in California as an IT specialist. :)
Now, I am not indian and I haven’t been to Australia but I still think that the treatment is a bit harsh. The only thing I don’t understand is how australians say they uphold the values of friendship, understanding and equality over everything else, but still commit some pretty awful race crimes?
Oh well *shrugs*
Just one point, those attacks on women at the beaches were done by lebanese immigrants, not indian students. And I find it quite ironic that australia, a country which lives off demand from China and India doesn’t want “gooks or indians”. And Kim, yes India has problems, so does Australia, but don’t try and extrapolate your one experience with an Indian girl in Australia to the rest. In my own experience of Indians in the US and the UK, they take to the majority culture well, and have a knack for combining their own practices with their host country’s
Herp i don’t see how thats ironic at all… there is a big difference between doing business with a people and living and sharing your country with them. People hate to hear it but i think racism is a much more natural reaction to multiculturalism than any of this pc bullshit we’re taught. Yeah i agree immigration is a good thing, but mass immigration like we have now is ridiculous, its making assimilation impossible and causing real aussies feel like foreigners in their own cities.
My family and I in a small way support an orphanage in India. The pastor and his wife are Indian Christians. The Orphan children are Hindu. Yet the Orphanage has had to flee for its life on several occasions and get accommodation wherever it can because of the Hindu discrimination. India is supposed to be a Democratic country, yet its Police force and army stand by and do nothing whilst these people are bashed and abused and the children are beaten or burnt alive…….if Australians are curry bashers, what do I make of this , when they attack their own race. Take some advise my Indian friends, get your own country in order before you cast stones at ours, we are not perfect, but we are not killers of the innocent either.
I would also like to make another point. I have recently worked with a company which is owned and run by an Indian Family. They are very nice people. In their office was a young Indian girl who was going through the procedure of getting her Australian citizenship. She was in all respect a wonderful person. But said point blank that she would never call Australia her home, and would never marry or socialise with Australian culture. Her aim was to make money to bring her relatives over, then marry an Indian from India, raise and educate her family here, and then return to India when they have established a business here that allows them to just drop over on a six monthly basis…It would appear our culture is good enough to become wealthy from, but not good enough to be a member of….. Maybe Australian don’t Hate Indians because of who you are, but for what you are. I for one don’t care if your crimson or purple, but I do not like the way our country is abused by anyone who is accepted here then demands equality whilst not returning it.
What a load of shit! Melbourne and Sydney are multi-cultural shit holes and i really doubt the offenders were Aussies. I can’t say i care though, if it means less Indians and gooks come here its a good thing in my mind
What about all of the gang rapes of young white Aussie girls at the hands of non-white thugs and heters of everything white? What about the gang attacks on whites, young and old by aboriginals. Let´s not forget all of the child rapes also done by aboriginals (while high on gasoline). I´m an American, and even I know these things. But black and brown people LOVE TO THROW THE WORD “RACIST” AND “RACISM” AT WHITE PEOPLE! That´s why the word is losing it´s potency. Many white people (like myself) aren´t affected at all when some “brownie” calls me a “racist”. That only translates to me as “white solidarity”, which, to me, is a badge of honor, and I wear it proudly! R. James
India Indians GO HOME!
We’re sick of you and your idol worshiping ways.
This is absolute nonsense. Most this anti-Indian attacks stem from Indians or other immigrants themselves
And when whites do attack it’s because they encourage racism with their abusive behaviors.
I wonder how many of the Indians who’re attacked was attacked by other immigrants.
