The cross is not necessarily a Christian symbol. It has been used for thousands of years by Sun god worshippers. (Look in the encyclopedias for this information.) There will be many false Christs on the horizon that will deceive even the elect the Scriptures tell us. There were never any images of Jesus left for us to copy and it is also against the Ten Commandment teachings. So beware the Jesus pictured in the Christian Churches knocking on the door and others might be the image of the anti-Christ that will deceive the multitudes. Symbols are secondary and meaningless if we don´t follow the redeemer´s teachings as stated in the parables and the Sermon on the Mount.

It may be because of what is written in John 10:22, Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah). It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah, the Festival of Dedication.
