A DRUG baron aged 81 and his 67-year-old accomplice were behind bars last night for smuggling enough cannabis to roll a joint for every adult in Britain.
Israelis Moshe Kedar and younger Mordechai Hersch were arrested after a tug boat arrived at Southampton carrying 12.5 tonnes of marijuana, worth £36 million.
The bust, led by the Serious Organised Crime Agency after intelligence from Israeli cops, was one of the biggest in UK history.
The huge haul, picked up from Morocco, had been destined for a Leicester-based drug gang led by brothers Mohinder and Baljinder Rai. SOCA surveillance officers watched Kedar in London as he picked up £10,000 cash and a mobile phone from the gang.
Prosecutors said Kedar and Hersch organised the shipment and came to Britain to oversee its transfer. The Rais were expected to sell the drugs via a network of dealers.
The Israeli OAPs and tug skipper Dragan Stankovic, 54, were convicted by a jury at Winchester Crown Court. The Rai brothers, who have each served a previous ten-year sentence for cannabis smuggling, admitted their involvement.
They and five other defendants will be sentenced tomorrow.
Kedar had no previous convictions, and a police source said: “Maybe he turned to crime very late in life, or maybe he simply never got caught before. Either way, his luck has now run out.”
The drug haul was so large it needed SIX sessions in a special incinerator to destroy it. Investigators said there was enough to make about 36 million joints – one for every man and woman in Britain.
SOCA enforcement chief Andy Sellers said: “This operation was a massive success. The drugs would have resulted in upwards of 3.5 million street deals, and funded a range of other criminal activity.”
