Victims Attacked While Waiting For Bus, Walking On West Colfax
Denver police say an alarming series of random stabbings along West Colfax are related and they need the public’s help in finding a suspect.
“It concerns us that somebody is out there targeting people and then assaulting them,” said police department spokesman Sonny Jackson.
The attacks have all happened in broad daylight, between 9:45 a.m. and noon.
The first incident happened on April 6 at West Colfax and Irving Street. The second happened on May 4 at the Vrain/Winona bus stop. The third happened on May 30 while the victim was walking eastbound on the south side of West Colfax at Wolff Street.
“I’m shocked,” said Denver resident Sara Garcia, while crossing Colfax at Irving. “I didn’t think anything like this would happen on Colfax because it’s so busy.”
Garcia told 7NEWS that she will stop listening to her i-pod in order to pay more attention to her surroundings.
“I need to be more aware of who’s standing behind me at bus stops,” she said.
Police said only one of the victims was hospitalized, and that the other two suffered minor injuries.
The department has stepped up patrols in the area and is asking business owners, pedestrians and motorists to keep their eyes and ears open.
“Hopefully those extra eyes and ears will help us get this guy in custody,” Jackson said.
Police have only a generic description of the assailant, a black male, about 5′ 9″ to 6′ tall, medium build with short hair.
They say the victims were so stunned by the attacks that they didn’t get a good look at any other identifying characteristics.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
