A judge has decided the fate of a man who killed a pregnant teenager, her unborn twins and her mother.

Judge Jeffrey Manning sentenced William “Bump” Brown to three life terms for the death of Tiffany Griffin and her unborn daughters.

The Pittsburgh man’s lawyer says his client doesn’t remember committing the heinous act after drinking for three straight days.

“The only way I could explain this is that this happened in some sort of alcoholic blackout,” defense attorney John Knorr said Tuesday. “He doesn’t even remember the events of about 18 hours that day.”

Police said that Brown, 35, was a family acquaintance who frequented Griffin’s Hazelwood home, and that he killed Griffin, 19, and her mother, Carmen, 44, after overhearing them making disparaging remarks to a neighbor in September 2003.

Testifying for the defense, Dr. Herbert Levitt told Manning that Brown has an IQ of 67 and suffers from mental retardation. Combined with his excessive alcohol intake, Brown had diminished mental capacity at the time of the killings, Levitt said.

Brown’s mother, Mary, testified that Brown began drinking at age 12 and that he was beaten by his father as a child and suffered from a learning disability.

“When his mother testified, he kind of put his head down. He got tears in his eyes. That’s the first time I saw him show that kind of emotion,” Knorr said. “It’s easy to say a cold-blooded killer never shows emotion. That’s not the case with him.”

Brown’s brother, Nehmiah Hemingway, and sister, Niesha Hemingway, told Manning that Brown raised them, guided them and fed them when their mother was at work.

Brown was “always the kindest, the sweetest, most loving. He was always kissing me,” Niesha Hemingway testified.

The death penalty is only being sought in connection with Tiffany Griffin’s death. Brown will get 20 to 40 years for his third-degree murder conviction in Carmen Griffin’s death.
