In 1633, Galileo Galilei was forced by the Roman Catholic Church to recant his statement in support of the Copernican theory that the sun, rather than the Earth, was at the center of the Solar system. Even after recanting, he was forced to spend the rest of his life under house arrest, but avoided torture and death at the hands of the Inquisition by doing so. How ironic that the U.N. has named 2009 “the year of Astronomy”, when the Church is again demanding the recantation of scientifically defensible but politically unpopular statements, and the new Inquisition is seeking to prosecute heretics.
Martin Luther: (whose recantation was demanded by the Church in 1520) “Unless I am convinced by Scripture and by plain reason and not by Popes and councils who have so often contradicted themselves, my conscience is captive to the word of God. To go against conscience is neither right nor safe. I cannot and I will not recant. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me.”
History has repeatedly vindicated heretics, and will undoubtedly do so once again.
